Viroc® Cement Bonded Particle Board
V-urban® Cement Bonded Particle Board
Viroc is a composite panel consisting of a mixture of wood particles and cement called the Cement Bonded Particle Board (CBPB). It combines the flexibility of wood with the strength and durability of cement, allowing a wide range of applications both indoors and outdoors. The production of Viroc panel complies with the specifications of EN 634 and EN 13986 standards and carries the CE Marking Certificate.
The Viroc panel has a heterogeneous appearance with different shades randomly dispersed, resulting from the natural colours of the raw materials used and the chemical reactions. Tone differences may be observed on the same face, between the faces of the same panel or between different productions batches.
V-urban® Cement Bonded Particle Board
V-Urban is a Viroc panel with varnish finish intended to be applied to ventilated facades. It has QB certification (Qualité pour le Bâtiment / Quality in Building) and has an Avis Technique Approval Document issued by the CSTB.

Surface preparation
Whenever the panel is to be applied to open view, even if a varnish finish is not planned, a surface cleaning/polishing must be performed with a cleaning disc to remove dust, scratches, dirt and salts.
The cleaning/polishing does not change the natural look of the panel, it will remain the stains and heterogeneities that characterize it, as well as some salts and incrustations that are embedded in the surface. Viroc has suitable cleaning discs, that will be supplied upon request.
Before applying the finish, the panels must be cleaned with a breath of air or, preferably, suction in order to be free of any type of dust, which will damage the finish.
Storage
The panels, when leaving the factory for transportation, are protected by a waterproof plastic screen. The side edges are protected with L-shaped cardboard including those in contact with the strapping of the packaging system. The protection of these edges should be maintained until the date of installation of the panels.
Viroc panels should be stored in a covered area, protected from sunlight and rain, with a flat and horizontal base. Pallets should be placed on supports high enough (≥8 cm) for easy forklift access. The maximum distance between supports should not exceed 800 mm and the distance between the first support and the top of the pallet should not exceed 210 mm.
If the pallets are piled on top of each other, all the support bases must be aligned to prevent deformation. It is allowed to pile up to 6 pallets, with a maximum of 4 meters.

Handling
Siempre que sea posible, la manipulación de los paneles debe realizarse utilizando los equipos Whenever possible, the handling of the panels should be performed using appropriate equipment such as forklifts or plate lifts.
When the panels have to be moved manually, they must be moved one by one in an upright position to remain flat and not deformed.
The panels are heavy, so their manual movement should not be performed without sufficient people being present.
Good manual handling practices should be followed, using appropriate personal protective equipment and following the rules of European Health and Safety legislation, Osha.Europa.eu (Factsheet 73).

Acclimatisation
When leaving the factory, the panels have a humidity of 6 to 12%.
To ensure proper installation conditions, the panel must adapt to the temperature and humidity conditions of the installation location. To do this, the straps should be cut and the protective plastic removed from the pallets. Prior to application, the panels must be at rest for at least 72 hours to acclimate to the installation site.
During acclimatization, the panels at the top of the pallets, whose straps have already been removed, may buckle, forming an upward facing concavity. This phenomenon is natural and happens due to the differential loss of moisture between the two surfaces. This process is reversible. The panel will be flat again if turned upside down with the face up. The same effect will be achieved by wetting the concave face (surface up) with water.

Cutting, drilling and machining
Boards can be cut, drilled and machined with power or compressed air tools commonly used in carpentry or mechanical metalwork.
Cutting, drilling and machining of Viroc and V-Urban boards releases dust that may contain traces of silica and cement constituent material. Appropriate personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves, goggles, etc. should be worn.
Cutting
The cutting of Viroc boards must be performed with circular saws with high wear-resistant carbide (tungsten) or diamond cutters. To make multiple cuts or to cut boards with a thickness of 19 mm or greater, a horizontal cutting table should be used. The cutting table will increase profitability.
Drilling
Drilling should be performed with non-impact drills using HSS (High Speed Steel) drills suitable for drilling metal.
Edge machining
Simple edge machining can be carried out on site using a portable router. Using the correct cutter, edges can be made by: Bevelling, rounding, grooving, etc.
The board edges may be supplied with factory grooves, tongue and groove or halved joint.
Facadesfachadas

Viroc panels can be applied outdoors, namely in ventilated facades, and is the ideal solution for outdoor linings thanks to their indisputable thermal insulation benefits.
The minimum thickness of the panel for application in facades is 12mm.
Protection of the panels through a coating of paint or varnish is recommended.
Flooringpavimentos

The construction of structural floors or lining for floors is another possible application of Viroc panels.
They are often used in the refurbishment of old buildings, replacing traditional wooden floors that deteriorate with water in the bathroom and kitchen areas and in zones connected to the facade walls.
The panels can be used to as a lining and finish on top of existing flooring.
The minimum thickness of the panels used in structural flooring is 19mm.
When used as a lining, with no structural function and laid on top of an existing floor, the recommended thickness is 12mm.
When applied as a flooring, pay attention to the loads that the Viroc panels will be subject to, given that the resistance depends on the thickness of the panel and the gaps between the supporting beams.
A coating of suitable paint or varnish to make the floors resistant to wear and tear is recommended.
Partition Wallsparedes

Viroc panels are also suitable for the construction of dividing walls.
When applied outdoors, the same rules apply as for the ventilated facades system.
An excellent solution thanks to the appearance, mechanical resistance, acoustic insulation, fire-repelling properties and durability of the panels.
It is the preferred choice for divisions in hotel rooms or cinemas, where acoustic insulation to airborne sound and fire-retardance are crucial aspects. Indoor damp areas are also ideal for using Viroc panels thanks to their resistance to dampness, such as swimming pool complexes, changing rooms and bathrooms.
Viroc panels can also be used to line walls, both indoor and outdoor.
The minimum thickness of the Viroc panels used in indoor walls in dry zones is 10mm and 12mm when applied in damp indoor or outdoor zones.
In damp zones, a coating of paint or varnish is recommended.
False Ceilingstetos

The Viroc panel is also used in false ceilings both indoors and outdoors, for its aesthetics and durability.
When applying false ceilings, open joints between panels must be provided, both indoors and outdoors.
The minimum thickness of Viroc panels used in indoor ceilings in dry areas is 10 mm and 12 mm in wet areas, whether indoor or outdoor.
In damp areas it is recommended to apply paint or varnish.
It is also suitable for supporting roof coatings, due to its mechanical resistance, insulation index to aerial sounds, thermal resistance and humidity resistance.
Furnituremobiliario

Viroc panels can be used for indoor and outdoor furniture.
It is a waterproof material, although if the panels are used outdoors or in damp zones they should be varnished.
A lasting solution given the high durability and load resistance of this material
Designdesign

Thanks to their recognised versatility, Viroc panels are also used in furniture, stairs, dividing walls, doors, worktops and other decorative and architectural items.
The possibilities are endless.
Lost Formworkcofragem_perdida

The strength and durability of the Viroc board make it an excellent performing product for lost formwork. In order to minimize waste, the board must be cut crosswise along its longest dimension, forming boards with a width of 1250 mm and the intended length.
The width of lost formwork boards is determined by the spacing between beams, whether metallic or reinforced concrete, plus 5 cm on each side, which is the minimum width for support on the beams.
Kitchenscozinhas

In kitchens, Viroc panels can be used for worktops, walls, furniture, floors and ceilings, keeping in mind that they must be varnished as a damp zone that also accumulates fatty substances.
They are ideal for refurbishments, and replacing or renewing materials in the kitchen.
It is a waterproof material by nature and a fire retardant.
Bathroomscasas_de_banho

In bathrooms, Viroc panels can be used for counters, walls, furniture, floors and ceilings, keeping in mind that they must be varnished as a damp zone that also accumulates fatty substances.
It is ideal for refurbishments, and replacing or renewing materials in the bathroom.

Finishes
Viroc panel is supplied raw, unfinished. The surfaces have some irregularities and imperfections, such as small incrustations, marks, scratches and salts from chemical reactions.
We recommend that the panel should have a finish with a varnished, to protected and make maintenance and cleaning easier.
Types of finishes
The application of varnish on the Viroc panel aims to protect against aggressions of the environment where it is inserted, such as sun and weather exposure, increasing durability, facilitating cleaning and maintaining its appearance over time.
Applying a varnish may change the natural color tone of the Viroc panel, giving it a “wet” look with some gloss. Before applying varnish to the panels, the surfaces must be completely clean and dry, without grease, dust or surface salts. Surface cleaning should be done by polishing with a cleaning disc or alternatively sanding the surface with fine grit sandpaper 120 or higher.
There are no specific paints and varnishes to apply to Viroc. The panel has a surface alkalinity (PH) of 11 to 13, so that paints and varnishes suitable for both concrete and wood surfaces are usually the best performers when applied to the Viroc panel.
Solvent-based varnishes with acrylic or aliphatic polyurethane resins are the ones that have shown the best performances. Water-based, acrylic or aliphatic polyurethane varnishes are the ones that least change the natural color of the panel.
In addition to the above characteristics, paints and varnishes must be suitable for their intended purpose. For example, if it is an exterior facade the paint/varnish must be suitable for use on exterior walls, if it is an interior floor the paint/varnish must have hardness and strength suitable for use in floors.
The use of Viroc panels on kitchen worktops and shower cubicles should be protected with a paint / varnish that does not degrade in permanent contact with water.
In general, the varnishes are easy to apply, but it is very important to note that the application must be continuous and constant, to ensure the homogeneity of the finish on the panel and so that the surface is not stained and with different shades. Panels should always be painted/varnished on both sides and tops, the application procedures, provided by the respective manufacturers, must always be followed in the recommended coats.

When required, panels can be supplied sanded / calibrated.
The calibration of the panels consists of thinning the surfaces with coarse sandpaper in order to minimize the variation in thickness.
Particularly when it is used as a support floor and the covering is a thin layer like a linoleum or vinyl canvas.
Once sanded, the surfaces are left with visible wood particles. The sanded panel has no decorative features, to be visible.

Location: Portugal
We were challenged to design and build a Reception/Studio for a Portuguese timber supplier called Proportional Diagonal. With this in mind, we chose to work with a proportional diagonal as an initial concept and create the model as a sculpture and object, arriving, after many studies, at the final geometric form. The 90º angle was the culmination of the project. Being a reception and also a studio, we created a minimalist atmosphere, in order to allow the decoration to fill the space versatilely, adapting to different situations. Due to the intense sun exposure especially in summer in Portugal, we opted for very resistant cladding materials, requiring good insulation and no openings to the south side. The chosen Viroc flooring with a matt varnish finish created an interesting contrast with the vertical poplar plywood walls that maintain a cleaner wood look in contrast to the angular pine walls with lots of knots.

House 826

Technical Specifications
Product: Viroc
Application: Exterior, Facades, Interior, Furniture, Walls, Shopfitting
Architecture: Nuno Ferreira Capa
Design: Nuno Ferreira Capa
Location: Portugal
House 826 is located on a ground floor of a 1970s building in the centre of Braga in Portugal, rehabilitated to receive the Pedro Remy Hairdresser’s space.
With 250m2 the space was closed for several years and suffered several interventions over time and presented successive layers of textures and materials, as well as having apparent part of its structure in concrete.
The project emerges with the partial interruption of demolition and use of existing structures that could coexist with the new program to be implanted in the space.
The unfinished look was a structuring concept of the project and defined the actions and the use of the Viroc Grey panel marks the new intervention, in perfect harmony with the exposed concrete structures, raw wall and ceilings.
Viroc was the choice for the cladding of the façades, internal walls, and furniture, perfectly integrated with the remaining original preserved structures and other new materials.

Location: Spain
The expansion project consisted of dismantling the roof of a three-storey building, with three apartments per floor, and replacing it with a new volume that contains the enlargement of two of the apartments on the top floor, a total of 97 m2 plus 54 m2 of terraces.
The construction was made of wood to facilitate the process and minimize weight. In fact, despite adding a floor, the total weight was reduced and thus doesn’t add load to a somewhat delicate building of the 1940ies, with a façade that is protected due to its historical value. It was possible to complete the works in 8 months and without moving the inhabitants of the 3rd floor.
The new top floor, whose shape is a result of the lighting angles required for the lower floors, contains several bright rooms with access to terraces, which add a lot of spaciousness to the apartments. All vertical façade elements are covered with Viroc panels. From the street, the extension is invisible.

Adrián Felípez begins, in February 2016, his personal project Miga. Between old Stone walls, inside an historic building, the Galician Bistró is placed. A new establishment where the fresh local products are careful cooked into a detailed architectural design.
The aim of the project was connecting the meals and the client. As a result, the kitchen is placed at the establishment core. According to the studio’s philosophy, architecture is the art of creating new spaces, experiences, and emotions, trying to activate as much as possible all senses of its users. In this case, the architects tried to show the cooking experience. How with fresh products the chef can make wonderful meals.
The main challenge of the project was the need for different spaces along the restaurant, creating private spaces where the customer will be into a special private atmosphere. As a result, there are three spaces. Firstly, at the entrance, some high tables to take a wine and eat some meal. Secondly the dining room, a static space where enjoy leisurely Miga’s food. Finally, a private room achieve a high level of intimacy and warmth.
Lights levitate above old stone walls, a polished concrete floor and board Viroc and pine furniture. All lighting fixtures were designed by the studio and realized by local custom lighting manufacturers. A singular lighting system has been executed, designed through a wiring placed in zigzag, of which hang a total of 100 light points type led.
The outcome of the project was identical to the original vision for the space. Thanks to a very open-minded client and his ability to understand complex design concepts and his willingness to create an original restaurant of very high quality made it easier for the studio to design and carry out its original vision until the finest detail.

Location: Portugal
The main challenge of this project was to explore the potential of an existing orchard, to take advantage of a space that was not usually used and make it more dynamic. Through modular construction, 2 modules were developed for the International School of Palmela that explored the possibilities of modular construction in wood and its spatial versatility.
Their implantation was carefully studied to integrate the modules between the existing trees by distributing them harmoniously through the orchard and interconnecting them by a wooden deck path that branches off to the different rooms.
In terms of materiality, the exterior of the modules is characterised using horizontal wooden slats and black Viroc with a natural finish. Viroc, given its versatility and aesthetic qualities, fitted perfectly into the concept we were looking for, not only because it presents a very interesting contrast to the wood, but mainly because of the nuances and variations it presents, very strong characteristics of a more natural material.

RCA House, Portugal

Technical Specifications
Product: Viroc
Application: Facade
Architecture: ARQ Eduardo Miguel
Location: City of Funchal, Madeira Island - Portugal
For the rehabilitation of this house located in the amphitheater of the city of Funchal, Madeira Island, it was elaborated a plan of specific changes scattered throughout the house, to improve the parameters of design, functionality, and interior comfort of the dwelling.
A garage that was transformed into a living room, a window that became the main entrance, a new swimming pool and solarium in the garden, a new garage under the garden, etc. were some of the changes that required constant attention to detail.
For the construction of the most striking element of this project, the new body of the main entrance of the house, it was decided to build a box lined on all sides with VIROC panel.
To do so, a masonry structure was built, duly waterproofed. On this structure, natural aluminum profiles of 6 cm were placed, to which 12 mm panels of natural VIROC were glued using the Bostik PanelTack system (primer + felt + mastic) and screws in the ceilings. For the finishing of the VIROC panels and respective fins it was decided to apply several coats of silicone water repellent, matt and colourless, thus enhancing the natural appearance of the raw VIROC. The tops/sides of this box were finished with stainless steel profiled sheeting.
Since this is a rehabilitation, the cladding in glassroc is an added value as it is a material that allows the connections between the old and the new construction to be hidden, concealing possible flaws and cracks in the masonry. On the other hand, this villa is located at a high elevation and is often exposed to permanent rain and humidity, requiring a resistant material that is easy to maintain and replace, and at a low cost.

At a location that combines urban and countryside experiences, one finds a school where colour is king.
The choice of material for its façades, which incorporate an original ventilation system, was the Viroc panels in its different colours.
The campus was designed in a wide-open green area where the buildings have interior gardens.
In buildings of one or two storeys, moulded to the landscape as if they were a pathway, the volumetry blossoms into a town, permeated by streets that cross it and allow one to see inside it.
At the heart of the complex is the kindergarten and primary school, where volumes with gardens and orchards characterise the educative facilities. The interior gardens look out onto the streets, while the classrooms are organised symmetrically at the bottom of the garden, facing an ample corridor. The coloured Viroc panels give life to the building, as well as thermal protection and controlled ventilation.
The panels were chosen because they are durable outdoors and waterproof. The colours make is a vivacious building where the children are happy to be.

Building belonging to a school in England, in a location surrounded by nature. The façade, designed in red Viroc, is based on a wooden framework that can be seen. Red Viroc was chosen because of its resemblance to the traditional Victorian houses of the vicinity.
The design of the structure includes historical influences out of respect and to be respected. The portico and its striking appearance, are hallmarks of these bygone eras that remain functional today.
Nature and sustainability were key aspects of the project, and the fact the material is natural also leads to better thermal and acoustic behaviour. On the façade, Viroc was cut, shaped into different scales and heights and machine worked to design 3D effects that endow the building with more life.
This theatre aims to be a meeting point and a welcoming arena for the children, in a harmonious blend of nature, learning and fun.

Result of the rehabilitation of a historical building, in Quinta da Fidalga, Arrentela, this place intends to value and promote the medalist theme.
The centre aims to bring together athletes and the school, academic and the community.
The material displayed here comes from donations, a large part of which was donated by the sculptor João Duarte, who has dedicated himself to the teaching and dissemination of medal art, as well as to its creation.
The building has an exhibition area, a meeting/training room, offices and workshops, a documentation centre, a collection room and an outdoor leisure area, and this mixture will allow the message of this art to be conveyed.
The structure combines traditional architecture with an entrance marked by Viroc on the façade, which imposes itself. It invites you to enter, to immerse yourself in the universe that this theme offers. It is a living example of how Viroc can be inserted in a modest architecture, being also a facilitating element of everyday life (a ramp that appears in the element contemplating the help to people with reduced mobility).

According to the responsible for the project, the renovation of this space allowed to create a new centrestage to the community, not forgetting the values of the people who will use it. The tradition of Portuguese material is of great importance, which is why Viroc was chosen to integrate and cover all the stalls in the restaurant area. The simplicity and straight language comes to life with Viroc. There are 10 booths which promote what is most local in Braga. A metallic structure was created where the panel was applied, a safe option, being moisture resistant and easy to clean. The pleasant space, balancing innovation and tradition, invites the community to live it in the best way.

FIRJAN house proposes a space for creating innovative solutions for the challenges of the economy. It is part of a small palace and includes business, educational and cultural activities.
Its architecture promotes the connection between the different buildings in the set, preserving the existing trees and creating an internal meeting square. The transparent facades combined with Viroc strips as a mobile panel invite lightness, protect the interior by its shading, while the wall, in grey Viroc, reveals a robustness that reveals an opening to the street. The viroc was mechanized, either for acoustic reasons or ventilation, and it helps the idea of a building open to the public, breaking the wall barrier.

Postgreen Homes

Technical Specifications
Product: Viroc
Application: Facades
Architecture: Manifest AD and Postgreenhouses
Photograph: Postgreenhouses
Location: United States of America
Aiming to create large open spaces and more efficient living in Philadelphia neighborhoods, Manifest AD atelier, in conjunction with Postgreenhomes, created a duplex house that has been replicated. Having already worked with fiber cement, they discovered that Viroc was the solution for these buildings, as it is “raw”, a natural material that varies from panel to panel. The wood present in the panels helps to reduce the carbon footprint of a typical cement panel, and also adds thermal efficiency and sound insulation improvements.
The atelier used Corten steel accents on the facade with Viroc, so that the contrast of these two natural materials with each other creates a dramatic facade, gaining life, rust and marks of time.
The interior works with an open kitchen, dining room and living room with access to a patio. The remaining spaces open to a large window that brings more light and air into the rooms than usual. Space flows from the inside to the outside.

FORA SUNGLASSES STORE

Application: Displayer and Counter
Architecture: Lopo de Carvalho Arquitectos
Photograph: Garcês
Location: Porto, Portugal
Located besides the famous Fonte Monumental de Mouzinho da Silveira (Mouzinho da Silveira Monumental Fountain), in the city of Porto, this new shop of the Fora Sunglasses chain is notable for the remarkable design of its displayer, customer counter, display case and vertical stairway to the shop’s storeroom located on the first floor.
Drawing inspiration from the granite that designs the city of Porto, this shop was fitted out using a cement and wood composite material called Viroc, which combines with the reinforced screed floor to form harmonious grey tones that enable certain architectural items to be highlighted using the white colour.
The displayer comprises two structures in a scythe shape that are positioned separately in one of the corners of the shop, as if dancing with each other: this Viroc construction serves to store the glasses in drawers and host display shelves in white lacquered wood. The shelves unify the two structures and subtly exacerbate the perception of movement characteristic of a dance.
The customer counter is light, with a slim design and a small volume that perfectly serves its function, aided by a block of drawers on wheels. The lightness of this counter is achieved by using the Viroc which merges into the reinforced screed flooring.
The display case, split into two modules, was designed for two purposes. It stores the sunglasses in drawers in the lower part and provides information about the product through an acrylic box illuminated from above.
The stairway connects the shop to its storeroom, and is made from white lacquered iron in a spiral that contributes to the theme suggested by the displayer of architecture in movement.

Architecture: Tryggvi Thorsteinsson, Minarc
Design: Erla Ingjaidsdottir, Minarc
Location: Iceland, Mt. Hengill
In the land of legends, where fire meets ice, the hotel appears, Ion, the most impressive luxury hotel in Iceland, designed by Minarc.
Situated on the slopes of Mt. Hengill, the Ion is perched on top of a series of pillars and cladded in Viroc. Its exterior resembles lava emerging from the mountainside.
The Ion, with the use of natural light, outdoor spaces and panoramic views of the surroundings, creates a sense of unity, where the limits of the Viroc walls seem to beckon to nature.
Inspired by the surrounding environment, Ion plays with innovative materials, sustainable practices and the natural characteristics of Iceland in its design. Surrounded by hot springs, they provide hot geothermal water and energy.
The prefabricated construction system in Viroc panels complies with environmentally safe construction standards. Floating wood and other natural materials are used extensively in furniture throughout the hotel. Beds and chairs are made from recycled materials.
Each room is detailed with strict lighting effects and subtle color palettes, as well as an abundance of natural light. The large panoramic windows in each room offer stunning views of Lake Thingvallavatn and the surrounding mountains, over which Nature’s own theater unfolds while the most spectacular light show, the Northern Lights, comes to life.

“On the road and in the mood for a healthy snack or smoothie, that’s why The Cold Pressed Juicery was created. The chain’s third space has opened in the middle of Amsterdam in a monumental canal-side building.
Two contrasting worlds come together inside The Cold Pressed Juicery. Past and present, calm and bustling. Upon entering, you place one foot on the marble floor which has been left untouched for an exclusive and natural look. On a higher landing is the ‘lounge’, the place to relax while enjoying a smoothie or snack.
The lounge slides into the monumental building like a box. The difference in height and the contrasting use of materials divide the room into different worlds. The floors and walls are made of Viroc.
Viroc has a pure appearance that fits in with the concept of The Cold Pressed Juicery. The sound absorbing properties mean that you can really relax in the living room and hold conversations without being disturbed.”

Technical Specifications
Product: Viroc
Application: Facades
Architecture: Rodrigo Alegre e Carlos Acosta
Location: México
An ecological retreat from urban life. Nominated for the Archdaily Building of the Year 2020.
This house is a prefabricated residence, an alternative to a luxury home, which minimises the environmental impact of new buildings. Ready in 99 days and built from environmentally responsible materials, it fits harmoniously into the urban landscape.
As the master Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe one day wrote, “less is more”. This is the premise that guides the ideas of the architects Rodrigo Alegre and Carlos Acosta (founders of the Mexico City STUDIOROCA, the design company responsible for the elegant interior furniture brand VMD). The goal is to experience and appreciate the natural beauty of Mexico with the smallest ecological footprint possible.
Viroc emerges as the main material for outdoor façades, combining the best features of wood through its flexibility and the endurance of cement. Among its many beneficial properties, it is non-toxic, waterproof, fire-retardant, it provides thermal and acoustic insulation, and its natural beauty emphasises the modern character of any home. Valchromat is used as a lining, endowing that touch of class needed in a luxury house. Waterproof by default, fire-retardant, natural and a full palette of colours available.
This low-cost, uncomplicated building solution provides a non-invasive connection with nature, harmoniously combining a natural and accessible luxurious environment. Viroc and Valchromat could not be prouder to be part of this project.

Modular house, Spain

Technical Specifications
Product: Viroc Grey
Application: Roofs and facades
Architecture: Carmina Casajuana, Beatriz G.Casares e Marcos González, Atelier MYCC
Photograph: FG + SG
Location: Spain
Built in three months and assembled in three days, this vacation house located in the Galician municipality of Cedeira is a good example of the many possibilities that modular construction, up to now associated with catalogue houses, offers today.
The program demanded by the client, along with the unique site of the house and modulation and transportation needs of prefabricated construction, inspired the design of this house built by the young Madrid studio MYCC, formed by Carmina Casajuana, Beatriz G. Casares and Marcos González.
The house is located on a steep slope, in a remote location in the northeast corner of the Iberian Peninsula, an area dominated by the imposing presence of the ocean and the slender forest of eucalyptus trees surrounding it. The terrain is surrounded by harvest fields, family farms and pitched roof houses. This image, protected by the area’s building codes, determined the geometry of the house that, simplified up to the point of evoking the basic house, was conceived as an autonomous piece that sits as a landscape observer and that speaks, with new terms, about the traditional language of the place.
The volume was wrapped with two materials with the purpose of setting up a dialogue with the landscape.
The roof and the side facades were covered with Viroc due to “it’s great strength efficiency in spite of being light and, therefore, is easy to maintain and move”.
According to Beatriz, Viroc was also chosen because of its concrete appearance and its “naturalness of being made of wood and not plastic”.
The two main facades of the house were clad with perforated corten trays following the schematized image of a forest silhouette, recreating the image of the surrounding vegetation.
After an assembly trial in the factory, and after making sure that everything fit in properly, the different modules and trusses of the building were taken apart to be packed and moved in trailers the whole 700 kilometers separating the factory from the remote seaside site where it was to be installed. All the parts were put together again on the designated site in just three days, and the finishing touch-ups were done in the following two weeks.
The end result is a high-quality product, designed with high standards of energy efficiency and sustainability.

Kindergarten, Portugal

Technical Specifications
Product: Viroc Black
Application: Facades
Architecture: Nadir Bonaccorso (coordenação), Sónia Silva
Photograph: FG + SG
Location: Portugal
The invitation to bid for the relocation of a kindergarten as part of an urban renewal plan offered an opportunity to reflect on a public building’s relationship with the rough surroundings of a suburban area while also working and experimenting bioclimatic concepts in a multidisciplinary project for a public space.
The signature of Nadir Bonaccorso on this project is unmistakable thanks to his exemplary respect for the principles of sustainable architecture.
The building has been constructed in bare white concrete. Its south side is covered with Viroc Black panels with protruding volumes for sun control offering a unique space for school activities.
The interior is covered with thermal insulation, almost like a second skin. A third skin in brick and plaster protects the insulation and guarantees thermal inertia inside the kindergarten. Heating is provided by a mixed system of solar panels and a gas boiler, which supplies hot water for normal use and heated flooring. The building is ventilated by the difference in pressure from forced air extraction in the toilets, entering the building via a system of grilles in the aluminium thermal frames.
According to Nadir Bonnacorso, “The assembled material constructs the space. I like using materials that show their own nature and Viroc panels have this characteristic. It’s a material that fits in with my construction of space.”
This bioclimatic building is an international reference today and received a special mention at the third edition of the Fassa Bortolo International Prize for Sustainable Architecture. In 2010 it was selected for the OECD Compendium of Exceptional Education Facilities.

Shelf House, Portugal

Technical Specifications
Product: Viroc Black
Application: Facades and Walls
Architecture: Daniel Capela Duarte, Atelier Mutant – Architecture & Design
Photograph: Daniel Capela Duarte
Location: Portugal
Shelf House is a project by the architect Daniel Capela Duarte, of the Portuguese studio Mutant – Architecture & Design.
The project consists of the “mutation” of a family home of the 1960s. The ownersproposed an in-depth intervention in order to adapt that already existing for a new functional purpose and give it a new, typically contemporary image. The image of a shelf was the starting point for the conceptual development of the solution. A white border is added around the building’s facade, to convey the idea of a shelf and serving as the base for the volumes that partition the elevation and represent the books. The black volumes (Viroc Black) contain the intimate areas of the house, namely the bedrooms, while the wood-clad volumes represent the home’s social areas, i.e. the main entrance and living room.
The architect Daniel Capela Duarte states that the reasons for choosing Viroc for this project were “the versatility and the aesthetics of the product, which give it the ideal thickness to be compatible with a “capoto” system facade. Viroc also had the required colour, meaning that no painting was required”.

Location: Portugal
The plans for refurbishing Júlio Dantas Secondary School in Lagos, Portugal, were drawn up by the Carlos Almeida Marques – Arquitectura e Urbanismo, Lda studio, headed by architect Carlos Marques.
Carlos Marques, who was in charge of the refurbishment project, explains:
”We used Viroc for the interior walls of Júlio Dantas Secondary School, because we needed to create a system of dividing walls that could satisfy four technical requirements:
it had to be easy to pass cables and pipes through, in such a way that they were simple to install and could be connected and disconnected easily, in keeping with how each room was intended to be used, providing the best functional and spatial framework for those elements;
the material used had to withstand the intensive use typical of public buildings, especially schools, and Viroc offers the kind of durability and hard-wearing capabilities required in such projects;
the walls had to provide thermal and acoustic insulation, so several studies, trials and tests were conducted with Viroc’s technical assistance, enabling us to come up with an efficient and cost-effective response;
finally, the rooms had to be flexible, given that schoolrooms are often reorganized, and the highly mobile Viroc walls meant that this could be achieved easily and with the minimum of resources.
Given the challenges we face in construction today, we see Viroc as a material that offers a modern approach to 21st-century design and architecture.”

Lisbon Terrace, Portugal

Product: Viroc Grey
Application: Flooring and outdoor furniture
Architecture: Ana Guerra
Photograph: FG + SG
Location: Portugal
Ana Guerra is the architect responsible for redesigning a terrace adjacent to a modern apartment in a gated condominium of the city of Lisbon, Portugal.
“The intention was to create an environment that is conducive to parties, for meals and to enjoy summer afternoons and evenings. The design contains an area for Yoga, a table for six people, a bar and sofas. The VIROC “sideboard” includes the bar, hides the table and provides space for storing the sofa cushions”, explains the architect Ana Guerra.
The architect responsible for redesigning this terrace chose VIROC due “to its flexibility properties that allow it to create all the required forms (such as doors, drawers and table), its high weathering resistance, which means its components can permanently stay outdoors, and the contemporary aspect of the natural-looking materials, which fit the architectural language of the building where they are used without needing any finishing. VIROC possesses all these characteristics, giving the project the uniformity required for the intended result”.

Location: Spain
The Spanish architect’s office, Ensemble Studio, was given the mission of transforming the former Madrid Matador into a Reader’s House, a benchmark cultural centre for contemporary creation in the city of Madrid.
The project is developed by the Germán Sánchez Ruipérez Foundation and led by the Spanish architect Antón García-Abril. It maintains and enhances the original nature of the manufacturing facility, combining the interior metal structures and original exterior masonry walls with precast concrete and Viroc that are now added to the building. This marks a clear difference from the original building while keeping the memory of the site as its history embarks on a new direction.
Casa del Lector thus becomes a symbiotic correlation between the universe of books and the architecture where the art of the word seems to flow through its contemporary shapes and materials.
Casa del Lector can host cultural activities of all kinds, such as exhibitions, conferences, training courses, creativity workshops, music concerts, film and performing arts festivals. These activities combine with applied research to contribute to the creation of a reader who understands, appreciates, assimilates, shares and interprets the world, society and our time.
Viroc Grey was the material chosen for all floors and for installation on some walls and ceilings.

Store, eCube Arquitectos, Portugal

Architecture: Joana Gouveia e Gonçalo Chivite | eCube Arquitectos
Photograph: Daniel Baptista
Location: Portugal
Joana Gouveia and Gonçalo Chivite from Portugal’s eCube studio were the architects of this store in Setúbal, Portugal.
The design process began by assuming that a space should have many possible uses and attract all kinds of users; a shopping area that could be easily tailored to any kind of activity.
According to Joana Gouveia and Gonçalo Chivite, the aim of the project was to “get away from the traditional idea of a store, without losing sight of the main aims, which were flexibility/adaptability, building cost and architectural value added”.
“With that in mind, we created a striking image for the building as a whole, balancing formal concepts to create impact for anybody looking at the building, and giving particular emphasis to the textures of the materials used to clad the facade, especially through the use of pre-fabricated panels of concrete and Viroc – a wood/cement composite.”
The choice of grey Viroc to clad the facade “was mainly due to its similarity with pre-fabricated concrete panels. This enabled continuity with the existing materials, creating a unitary object. We also used it for its intrinsic characteristics, because it can be applied flexibly for interiors and exteriors, enabling specific stereotomy and angles”.

Architecture: Caiano Morgado Arquitectos
Photograph: Fernando Guerra e Sérgio Guerra
Location: Portugal
This project from the Portuguese architecture studio Caiano Morgado Arquitectos involved refurbishing a flat on the top two storeys of a sea-front building.
The refurbishment had two main aims: to boost the flat’s link with the surrounding land- and seascape and to make it more functional.
According to the designers, the strategy developed for the Warborn Flat “was based on the bespoke principle, by exploring the inherent functionality of each area.
“The windows and balconies have been re-worked in order to enhance the scenic effect of the surroundings and emphasize the transition and link between the interior and exterior.
“Timber, white and Viroc define the flat’s various areas. Black glass provides a boundary element, and its reflections re-interpret the landscape and seascape.”
The sea and the horizon become omnipresent throughout the flat, whether framed by a window or briefly captured in a reflection.
Grey and black Viroc were used for the project, to clad walls and ceilings.

Product: Viroc Grey
Application: Wall Covering
Architecture: Raul Montero Martínez
Photograph: Cristina Núñez Baquedano
Location: Spain
The purpose of this project by Spanish architect Raul Montero Martínez was to refurbish a small flat in the historic centre of Pamplona in Spain.
The strategy was to release as much space as possible, make better use of the natural lighting, and make the flat more functional and dynamic through the use of hidden and fold-away modules that could be altered to suit requirements, such as working or sleeping.
It was decided to use a limited range of materials for the apartment. Grey Viroc panels were fitted vertically to form the dynamic modules, timber predominates on the floor and ceilings, some of the original beams having been refurbished, and the original brick wall has been left exposed, to emphasize features of the original construction.
According to the architect, Raul Montero Martínez, “the result is spectacular. The owner was very pleased and really likes the use of Viroc in his flat”.
This small flat has become a unique, functional space that can be altered according to needs, the use to which it is put, and even one’s mood.

Lego Flat, Spain

Location: Spain
This unique apartment in the centre of Barcelona once housed the water tanks for the adjoining building.
Inspired by the extreme functionality found on board boats and the minimalism of Japanese interiors, all the comforts of a hotel suite in a compact environment are provided within the 22sqm of useable area, the clean design being based on two materials: timber and grey Viroc.
Viroc is a waterproof material, is aesthetically attractive and is easy to work with. Along with timber, it was used for all of the apartment’s horizontal and vertical cladding and panelling.
The walls are designed to hide all of the furniture as part of a meticulous system comprising various opening mechanisms, which contain everything needed in a house. The result is a universe that changes according to the time of day.
An outside stairway connects the lower floor to the terrace, which rounds of the comfort provided by the flat with magnificent views of the city.

Cantilever House is an ecological single dwelling project by the French architect James Bansac.
This house is built on a hillside on the banks of the River Saône in Rochetaillée, France. It uses a wooden structure as a starting point. It consists of two blocks, one concrete and the other of wood, one stacked on the other then the blocks are staggered, challenging the laws of gravity and the resilience of materials.
Viroc Grey was used to clad the facades and cover the indoor walls of this project. According to the architect in charge, James Bansac, “Viroc was chosen for this project primarily because of its natural appearance which gives it a very interesting appearance of concrete. Viroc’s price/quality ratio also influenced the choice.”

Location: Spain
The aim of this project was the restoration of the interior of an apartment of the 1960s in the city of Vigo, in Spain.
This apartment was originally composed of many divisions, typical of 1960’s constructions. It has been transformed from all these little rooms into a large interior space divided only by furniture, where everything happens. All the rooms and bathrooms open to this large common area. Of particular note is the children’s bedroom which joins with this large common area during the day by opening a large sliding door.
According to the project managers, the architects Jordi Castro Andrade and Maria González Ferro, “to emphasize the large central space as the axis of the new home, we tried to give it, besides its large floor area, greater texture using Viroc Grey to create all the storage units and partitions of the apartment. Viroc is a material that gives each panel a subtly different texture, helping us to read the central space of the apartment.”

The project was designed by architect and motorcyclist Miguel Caetano, who “wanted to highlight the importance of the association, with its enterprising, irreverent, creative and social spirit, via an architectural structure that would serve as a monument”.
The building can be viewed as two volumes, one being “essentially white, recalling the Algarve’s architectural tradition, with cubic, easily understood forms, and bereft of decorative elements”, mainly housing areas used for the club’s internal affairs. The other is clad in grey Viroc panels, giving it a look that is “cutting edge and contemporary, incorporating the entrance hall and main room”, intended more for club members’ social activities.
In addition to offices, a bar, kitchen and toilets, this building also has a double bedroom and dormitories sleeping 12 people, a private kitchen, showers, a library, and a wide mezzanine over the bar.

Kindergarten, Spain

Technical Specifications
Product: Grey Viroc
Application: Facades
Architecture: Santiago Carroquino and Hans Finner
Photograph: Roland Halbe and Jesús Granada
Location: Spain
The purpose of this project, designed by architects Santiago Carroquino and Hans Finner, was to create a nursery school that fitted into its urban surroundings, comprising various eight-storey residential buildings and overlooking a public park.
The designers’ greatest concerns were to create a building that was as environmentally sustainable as possible, and which at the same time would be sufficiently versatile for the kinds of educational activities for which it was intended.
Concluding that the top of the building would be the most visible part, the architects chose to create a carpet of grass on the roof, which blends in with the adjacent park when seen from the surrounding buildings.
The façade structure, ventilated using grey Viroc, provides energy efficiency for the entire complex, and at the same time gives it a contemporary and sophisticated look, in addition to the solar panels installed on the roof.
The interior of the building, which is for children from 4 to 36 months old, is highly versatile. Small rooms can be combined to create larger areas, depending on the particular teaching programme being followed.

Roman Sepulchral Way Interpretation Centre, Spain

Technical Specifications
Product: Viroc Black
Application: Wall Cladding and Exhibitit Supports
Architecture: Sergi Ventosa e Adelina Casanova
Photograph: Julio Ungidos
Location: Spain
The Roman Sepulchral Way in Barcelona was found by chance during public works in the 1950s in an area destroyed by bombing during the Spanish Civil War. This archaeological discovery comprises the necropolis and the layout of the sepulchral way of the 1st and 3rd century that led to Barcino, the name given to Barcelona.
The Interpretation Centre is next to the archaeological zone. This centre houses the objects discovered in excavations and explains the organisation of Barcino and documents Roman funeral rituals.
Inside the Roman Sepulchral Way Interpretation Centre of Barcelona, designed by the architects Sergi Ventosa and Adelina Casanova of the Udeu studio, the sequence of unpolished Black Viroc panels arranged in triangles gives dynamism to the space, while also evoking the idea of trenches at an archaeological dig.The industrial aesthetics of Viroc, on which the information content was digitally printed, brings austerity to the space.

Jordan Street Office, United Kingdom

Technical Specifications
Product: Viroc Grey
Application: Wall Cladding
Architecture: Pearson Architects
Location: United Kingdom
This building, at 12 Jordan Street, Liverpool, United Kingdom, is one of the few Victorian brick buildings remaining in the area.
After suffering a severe fire, the building was refurbished by Pearson Architects. The original appearance was retained, but it was converted into offices. The key to the refurbishment was adaptability. The creation of an open space divided solely by a central corridor frees up the side areas alongside the outer walls. The bricks, which are typical of Victorian buildings, are left exposed, and the spaces can be modified or adapted to suit users’ needs.
Viroc was chosen for this project mainly for its industrial aesthetic, durability and fire-resistance. According to the architect in charge of the project, Miles Pearson, “We were able to apply Viroc quickly, without the need for skirting boards or additional finishing. Viroc proved to be an excellent alternative to the plasterboard or painted walls that are seen in many buildings”.

Location: Brazil
These “eco-portable” toilets have been developed by Brazilian architects Sérgio Viana and Jonathan Valle from Estúdio SJ2A. They have been designed using shipping containers to create sustainable architecture that makes maximum use of ecological building materials and techniques.
The containers have been modified to maximize the use of natural light. As mobile structures, the interior cladding employs flexible materials that can withstand a limited amount of movement.
According to the project architects, “The combination of the strength and flexibility of wood and the durability and rigidity of cement made Viroc panels ideal for this kind of use. Viroc enabled us to install all of the plumbing and electrical conduits need to make the equipment work.”

The Museum Casa Padre Toledo is an eighteenth century building inserted into the Tiradentes Cultural Campus.
Opened in 2013, Casa Padre Toledo Museum is an eighteenth century building inserted into the Cultural Campus of Tiradentes, the Federal University of Minas Gerais.
The expography Museum Casa Padre Toledo has the appreciation of emptiness, one of its essential ingredients, perhaps its own advantage. In order to direct the visitor’s attention to the surfaces of paintings and to the materiality of the house, Isabela and her team bet in simple artwork – colored lines that surround the openings – in conjunction with irreverent design furniture that support the contemplation of the ceilings and walls.
The interesting thing to note is the mix of Viroc with soapstone, typical stone of the Baroque Mineiro, from Minas Gerais, used in mobile displays, says the Architect Isabela Vecci, responsible for the project.

Plaça d’Europa Parking, Spain

Technical Specifications
Product: Viroc Grey
Application: Facade
Architecture: Marià Castelló Martínez e Xico Ribas + Héctor Martínez
Photograph: Estudi Es Pujol de s’Era
Location: Plaça d’Europa. Es Pujols. Formentera. Spain
Plaça d’Europa Parking aims to provide 136 parking spaces to the coastal area of the village of Es Pujols, which concentrates the major part of tourism on the island of Formentera.
In order to release the pressure of road traffic for pedestrians in the entire area of the Plaza de Europa, it has been developed a building of 3018 m2 completely buried whose cover forms a public space.
The simple geometry of the plant helps to optimize the use of the surface and only altered by an annex of facilities, whose facade is the result of the creation of the access ramp at the middle of the northeastern end of the building. Behind this unique building facade are located the control center, bathroom, water deposit and fire fightihng facilities.
Inside, the regular program of the isotropy functional and structural system have only an exception on the insertion of a longitudinal patio which absorbs the regulatory needs of natural ventilation, while visually connecting the parking level with the public space of the Plaza de Europa. This longitudinal section also represents an important source of natural light and houses inside the evacuation elements and vegetation that bring to mind the existing indigenous pine forest before the urbanization of the area.
“Plaça d’Europa Parking” is a project made almost with a single material: concrete. We used it in different ways: in situ, prefabricated, in tiles and in light-weight panels. Viroc offered us a solution in dry construction to keep the material harmony in the space, keeping the soul of the project.”, claimed Marià Castelló Martínez, architect of the project.
The resulting interior space is of great constructive simplicity and sincerity, reversing a general harmony. The structure is also partly enclosure and left visible. The facilities have been studied to relate to the structural grid and allowed to view, to appreciate its beauty.

Location: Portugal
The project is implemented in a typical village of Beira Baixa, characterized by its traditional and vernacular architecture. Its location on the outskirts of the urban core, at a narrow strip of land with wide visibility for the Ocresa river, allows together with its program content, a differentiated architectural response that simultaneously respect the characteristics of the place.
The solution of ventilated facade Viroclin was recommended by the responsible architect Mario Benjamin. “It corresponded esthetically and functionally to the architecture intention. Our purpose was to maintan consensus with the initial project, either by the language of the materials used or by the constructive strength and versatility of the execution.”, he says.
The results are characterized by two volumes with four cottages. The cottages follow the topography of the land, assuming a styling that completes itself and dialogues with the surroundings.

Photograph: Daniel Ducci
Location: São Paulo, Brazil
The Dona Ana Rosa Institute (IDAR) is a nonprofit civil organization, aimed at providing free assistance to underprivileged children and young people in 3 programs, in partnership with the São Paulo City Hall.
The IDAR aims to promote integration between the community, parents, students and employees to strengthen ties and provide activities that connect the Institute and families in order to guarantee users their right to basic care.
Our challenge was to insert a new building into an already built-up area in western São Paulo. The new building will be situated within a set of structures featuring pavilions with gable roofs that were once industrial warehouses.
There were two possible routes to take: either using the existing building, a warehouse with few architectural qualities and not designed for the current purposes; or creating a new model showcasing the institution’s transformation to the entire community, centering on charity work. The second model was chosen and Viroc was used to provide a rational, economical, clean and low impact project.

Rehabilitation Teatro Cine Elma, Spain

Technical Specifications
Product: Viroc Grey
Application: Interior wall cladding
Architecture: Hildegard Glez-Cebrián F. de Caleya e Jan Liebe
Photograph: Maderas Ramos Moreira
Location: A Proba do Caramiñal, Spain
Cine Elma (1950) is one of the most emblematic buildings of the municipality. Its use as a movie theater was replaced by the emerging theatrical activity.
The main goal of this rehabilitation project was to adapt the existing building to the needs of the theater. A new covering unites the whole theater to a single height, allowing to incorporate a large panoramic window that delimits great part of the building.
The characteristics of the building were recovered to the maximum, recovering openings in the façade that were covered over the years. This allowed to recover the visibility from the public spaces increasing the luminosity and fomenting the visual relation between the exterior and the internal activity of the theater.
The facades were painted in a light tonality allowing to emphasize the frames, structures and existing paintings. The new interventions (bathrooms, auditorium and technical rooms) are perceived as independent structures.
The seats are concentrated in the points of greater visibility and the circulations are carried out by the sides.
Several products were used for this rehabilitation, with a greater focus on Viroc and Valchromat.

FAQS
No. In Europe asbestos has been prohibited since 2005 through the 2003/18/CE directive.
In indoor applications, the joints can be sealed using a polyurethane mastic.
We do not recommend sealing the panels on a facade.
he expected durability of a ventilated façade made from Viroc panels is the same as a wall built using traditional methods, which is normally considered 50 years.
The vast majority of problems occur in corners and split edges, owing to incorrect installation of the panels. They must be fixed so as to allow the dilation and shrinking of the panel caused by temperature and humidity variations.
Yes, we recommend that the panel be applied on a wooden or metal structure as if it was a lining.
The cement in the panels contains calcium salt, meaning that during the hydration reactions of the cement, salts are produced that rise to the surface (primary efflorescence). When the panels are installed outdoors, if they are not varnished, the salts may migrate to the surface (secondary efflorescence) after coming into contact with rainwater. This is more common in damp and cold climates.
Although the panel has a degree of flexibility, we do not recommend its application in a curve. We recommend lining curved surfaces using a series of small straight stretches.
The panel density is 1350 ± 100 Kg per m3, so a 10-mm thick panel weighs 13.5 Kg/m2.
There are no specific paints or varnishes for Viroc panels. The panels have an alkaline surface (11 to 13 pH), so usually paints and varnishes suitable for concrete and wood simultaneously have the best results when used on Viroc panels. Solvent-based acrylic resin and aliphatic polyurethane paints and varnishes have shown the best results. Water-based acrylic resin and aliphatic polyurethane varnishes have the least effect in changing the original panel colour
A wood stain is a varnish used to colour wood. If the wood stain is suitable for the surface of the Viroc panel, mentioned in the previous question, it can be used.
Tungsten hard metal circular cutting discs are recommended. Diamond cutting discs are only recommended in saw benches.
A water jet cutter may be used and is as effective as a saw. Laser cutting is also possible, but the edges will have a burned look, on the black coloured panels.
No, the holes must be drilled by the installer.
Yes, a set of very high-quality installers have worked with Viroc.
Viroc panels can be used as a support material for a roof that will be lined. We do not recommend using Viroc panels as the lining of the roof. On flat or near flat surfaces, owing to higher exposure to the sun and puddles of water forming, the dry-damp cycles can lead to the appearance of small cracks in some panels.
